Andre "Shabaka" Gay

Shabaka has evolved from a student of history, politics, social studies, and psychology, to a prison activist, teacher, mentor, and now, an elder. He is proudly one of the co-founders of the Human Rights Coalition (HRC), an organization that has been defending the rights and lives of prisoners for the last 20 years. Along with other HRC co-founders, he drafted a template for a Prisoner’s Bill of Rights and plans to continue the fight for the rights of people behind the walls now that he’s home after more than 50 years in prison.

A photo of Andre "Shabaka" Gay. Shabaka is a Black man wearing thin glasses, a West African dashiki that is multicolored but predominantly blue, navy pants, and white sneakers. They are sitting on a wooden fence with a backdrop of trees behind them, smiling at the camera.
